Today is a day of optimism and closure and this applies not only to financial markets but also the world of sports. Today is Opening Day in Major League baseball which for many tortured fans will be the last time they will see their teams atop the standings. It is also the beginning of the Sweet 16 where the hopes and dreams of a magical championship run will continue or come to an end (for many of us broken brackets ended any optimism on this front last week). Within financial markets today is the final trading session of the month and Q1. March was another solid month with broad based participation. The S&P 500 is extending its monthly winning streak to 5 months closing up around 3%. This brings YTD gains to ~10% the best start to a year since 2019 and the second consecutive double digit quarterly gain.
We believe in the value of educating, informing and providing insights to all market participants. Whether you’re an institutional user of our technology, an experienced trader or a retail investor starting out, the New York Stock Exchange provides expertise to connect you to opportunity.
When Wednesday expirations were added to five ETFs1 in November 2023, short-dated trading has gained market share in all five of them. The industry has been discussing the reasons behind the short-dated trading phenomenon and debating whether additional expirations should be considered for single stocks.
Retail participation in options market trading rose sharply during the pandemic, peaking at 48% in July 2022. While it has bounced around since then, it hit 45% in July 2023 (Chart 1). This data suggests that substantial retail options trading is here for the foreseeable future.
U.S. listed equity options exchanges offer customers a wide array of market models to meet different investors’ and firms’ needs. NYSE American and NYSE Arca, now both trading on NYSE’s world class Pillar Matching engine, cover the two main market models. NYSE Arca leads price/time exchanges’ market share. NYSE American offers customers price improvement auctions with a pro-rata model.

NYSE Senior Market Strategist, Michael Reinking, offers his weekly update on the market and a look to key upcoming catalysts.
The NYSE Data Science team looked at the dollar cost saving for imbalance-offsetting auction orders and the likelihood of such orders being executed at favorable auction price.
