NYSE asked its listed companies to provide information on what they are doing to advance the world through corporate social responsibility initiatives. The above case study is what Azul Airlines (NYSE: AZUL) shared with us about their programs. (NYSE presents the information for informational purposes, but neither represents nor warrants the accuracy of the narrative, which relies solely on material provided by Azul Airlines).
Since 2012, Brazil’s Azul Airlines has been supporting Vaga Lume, a non-profit organization in São Paulo that provides underserved communities with access to books and learning materials, as well as volunteer time to teach families how to read. The program crosses 149 rural communities located across 23 municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon region, including the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins.
Between 2014 and 2016, Azul reported that its employees supported Vaga Lume by building and maintaining 149 community libraries and donating more than 17,000 books, which benefited approximately 25,000 children in the Amazon. These efforts have been invaluable to the communities, as they have created the fundamental building blocks to help improve reading, writing and speaking skills.
Azul Airlines also flew Brazilian Amazon community leaders to Tefé, Macapá, and São Paulo for training to lead the education programs in their own communities, which included learning how to manage local libraries and teach children how to read using Vaga Lume’s methodology. According to the airline, more than 1,400 employees and 673 Vaga Lume volunteers were trained to support the program.
Azul Airlines continues to support Vaga Lume and hopes to expand its efforts in the years to come.
"Our partnership with Vaga Lume is extremely important to Azul Airlines. Our employees are taking a hands-on, active role in helping to transform these Brazilian Amazon communities," said Carolina Constantino, Manager, Communications, Culture and Social Responsibility at Azul Airlines. "We are truly honored to have the opportunity to touch so many lives with the hopes of improving their futures through this positive program."
