With geopolitical concerns at the forefront there was a clear risk off trade heading into the weekend. On Friday equities sold off sharply, while Treasuries, oil and the USD index all moved higher in a flight to safety. The S&P fell ~1.5%, ending the week lower by 2.5%, its second consecutive weekly decline. Amidst the selloff the index tested its 50d ma (~5,110) for the first time since reclaiming that level back in early November.
As widely telegraphed Iran did strike Israel over the weekend. Much of the strike had been intercepted leaving little damage and no reported casualties. Iranian officials have said that this concludes the response and markets are hoping that the situation will de-escalate from here. However, this situation is by no means over and the back-and-forth headlines have continued throughout the day. Overnight there was an unwind of some of the defensive trade with equity futures bouncing while Treasuries moved lower. Both of those moves accelerated following a retail sales report that came in well ahead of expectations. The S&P 500 opened up ~1% but couldn’t clear Friday’s intraday high ~5,175. Equities have been drifting lower throughout the session and have just taken out Friday’s lows.
