New York, NY April 19, 2013 - In celebration of Financial Literacy Month, NYSE Euronext (NYX) hosted its fourth annual Financial Capability Week. More than 100 guests gathered at the company's offices in the U.S. and Europe to celebrate, highlight and share innovative approaches to financial capability.
"We host Financial Capability Week each year to raise awareness of the importance of financial fitness and education, shine a spotlight on the many organizations and companies doing good work to address these issues and promote collaboration across sectors by bringing leaders together around this important topic," said Michelle Greene, Head of Corporate Responsibility at NYSE Euronext.
In celebration of Financial Capability Week, U.S. bell ceremonies were celebrated by many companies and organizations, including the Council for Economic Education, the Center for Financial Services Innovation, the Financial Literacy Center, Grameen Bank, HelloWallet and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Bell ceremonies in both Lisbon and New York also celebrated NYSE Euronext's global partnership with Junior Achievement. In addition, a bell ceremony in Brussels celebrated a lecture series on the role of the stock market in the financing of companies, which included Pascal Smet, the Minister for Education, representatives of the Department of Education of the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) and university students.
Conferences were also held at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in conjunction with the bell ceremonies to convene thought leaders and encourage collaboration around financial capability. The week began with a high level forum on Financial Capability: Empowering Girls and Women, which brought together women and girls' empowerment organizations and experts in the financial capability field to promote the financial empowerment of women and girls. Panelists included Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Prize recipient and founder of Grameen Bank; Rosie Rios, US Treasurer; and Anna Marie Chavez, CEO of Girls Scouts of USA, which launched a new study on girls' financial capability at the NYSE. A separate forum on Workplace Financial Fitness, celebrated NYSE Euronext's new initiative to increase workplace financial fitness by offering tools and resources to NYSE-Listed companies in the US, including access to resources provided via a partnership with HelloWallet, a leading provider of web-based tools that employees can use to set and reach their personal financial goals.
"Providing support for financial fitness in the workplace benefits both employees and employers," said Greene. "Given our position at the nexus of so many of the world's leading companies, we feel a special responsibility to promote workplace financial fitness. Through our own initiatives and through partnerships, NYSE Euronext is working to provide resources to our listed-companies to assist them as they help improve the financial well-being of their employees. These efforts will help individuals and families in our communities build more secure financial futures. "
In Europe, NYSE Euronext offices in Belfast, in partnership with Business in the Community NI, held a panel discussion on the importance of supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as financial literacy initiatives in schools. NYSE Euronext offices in Lisbon hosted the inaugural Young Professional Sessions (YPS), which aims to promote financial literacy and educate young professionals about the capital markets. In addition, Carlos Tavares, President of CMVM, the Portuguese securities market regulator delivered a speech on the Portuguese National Plan for Financial Literacy.
