New York, March 9, 2012 --The NYSE Group, Inc. today reported short interest as of the close of business on the settlement date of February 29, 2012. Based on information received from members and member organizations, short interest increased to 12,578,154,576 shares from 12,565,610,623 shares (revised) on February 15, 2012. This was a increase of 12,543,953 shares. The short interest on February 29 was equal to 3.29 percent of the total shares outstanding. The short interest in warrants as of February 29 amounted to 126,214,142 warrants, compared to 126,566,694 warrants the previous period. As of the settlement date, there were 4,555 stocks and 46 warrants available for trading. Of these, 3,830 issues had either a short position of at least 5,000 shares or a change of 2,000 shares since the last monthly report. A short sale is any sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is completed by the delivery of a borrowed security.
