About Make Your Mark
Make Your Mark is the UK’s largest enterprise challenge for 14-19 year olds. Its aim is to increase the entrepreneurial ambition of young people and improve their enterprise capabilities. The Make Your Mark Challenge is run by Enterprise UK, www.enterpriseuk.org/makeyourmark is funded locally by Invest Northern Ireland and sponsored by the Department of Education. The competition was held during Global Entrepreneurship Week (16-20 November 2009). Working in teams, more than 1,400 local students representing 42 post primary schools and colleges were given just 24 hours to develop a profitable, original business idea inspired by something local which would minimize any impact on the environment.
Sixteen shortlisted teams presented their business ideas to a panel of industry experts including representatives from Invest NI and NYSE Euronext. The winner in the age 14-16 category winner was Christian Brothers School, Omagh and the winner of the age 16-19 category was Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch.
Both teams then had an opportunity to pitch to a top panel of judges in London with students from across the UK at the Make Your Mark national final. Judges included Will King, entrepreneur and founder of global toiletry brand King of Shaves, Channel 4 News Business Correspondent Benjamin Cohen and the British Council’s Philip Goodwin.
The group of Assumption Grammar School students narrowly missed out on the top UK prize, finishing third in the 16-19 age category of the national final after battling it out against 11 other teams from around the UK. (Source: Invest Northern Ireland)
