mtvU and NYSE Euronext Join Forces to Award Start-Up Funding for a Bamboo Charcoal Company, a Socially-Minded Tea Company or an Innovative Medical Technology Business in the “Movers & Changers” Competition

Student Teams from Tulane University and University of California Berkeley vie for $25,000 in start-up money in mtvU series premiering November 16th

New York NY –November 13, 2009- MTV’s 24-hour college network mtvU and the NYSE Euronext (NYX) today announced that two teams from Tulane University and one from UC Berkeley are finalists in the “Movers & Changers” competition and will be featured in the upcoming, short-form series premiering on mtvU November 16, 2009.  These budding social entrepreneurs will travel to New York City to compete for the ultimate prize -- $25,000 in start-up money.

The challenge, which launched in August, aims to uncover the country’s next social entrepreneurs who are poised to make a positive impact on society.   The competition will culminate on Monday, November 16, 2009 at NYSE Euronext’s Global Entrepreneurship Week: Mentoring Madness, where students from around the world will gather with business leaders and leading entrepreneurs including Blake Mycoskie, founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes; Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus; Stephen Hanson, Founder and President of BR Guest Restaurant Group; and Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group.  Before capturing the ultimate prize, each team of finalists will present their business plans to the “Movers & Changers” Board, a gathering of the top business and pro-social minds.

The mtvU and NYSE Euronext “Movers & Changers” finalists are:

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA’S BAMBOO LOTA: UC Berkeley’s Joanna Kim, Kyson Bunthuwong, and Stephanie Wu hope to bring environmental, health, and economic improvements to poverty-stricken Malawians through the establishment of a bamboo charcoal company.  Through this venture, the group plans to teach rural villagers the tools necessary to successfully maintain and harvest bamboo, providing the rural poor an opportunity for a sustainable source of income.

Tulane University’s WET Tea:  Nic Lagatta, Shea Shelton, and Jay Zhao plan to raise social awareness, foster community involvement, and provide monetary support for the preservation and reconstruction for the Gulf Coast Wetlands by selling a high-quality artisan, “WET Tea.”  For each box of tea sold, the group plans to plant one baby cypress.  They also plan to work with local state and non-profit entities to help support communities in South Louisiana through hands-on wetlands restoration.

Tulane University’s SafeSnip: Current obstetrical technology provides inadequate protection from blood splatter when cutting umbilical cords, placing birth attendants at risk. To reduce the risk of umbilical cord infections or mistakes made by untrained delivery personnel, Tulane University’s Stephanie Roberts and William Kethman created a disposable, comprehensive unit to accurately clamp and cut umbilical cords in an easy-to use motion. To decrease manufacturing costs and increase availability of the device in both developing and developed nations, each device will be made entirely of plastic.
