The Basic Search To begin a search, type in a few descriptive words and press the Enter key or click the Search button for a list of relevant results.
Note: Encrypted, viewable PDF documents are converted to HTML for indexing; however, the HTML is not displayed.
Synonyms
Synonyms are words with different spellings that have the same or similar meanings. They are displayed as "Other suggested searches" with your results.
"AND" Searches
The search feature only returns pages that include all your search terms. It is not necessary to include "AND" between terms. To broaden or restrict the search, simply include fewer or more terms.
"OR" Searches
To retrieve pages that include either word A or word B, use an uppercase "OR" between terms. For example, to search for stock or bond, enter: stock OR bond.
Seeing Your Search Terms in the Results
Every search result lists one or more excerpts from the actual web page to display how your search terms are being used. In the excerpt, your search terms are displayed in bold text so that you can quickly determine if that result is from a page you want to visit.
Capitalization
Searches are not case sensitive. For example, searches for "stock," "STOCK" and "Stock" all return the same results.
Stop Words
It is not necessary to include words and characters known as stop words in your searches. These include most pronouns and articles such as "where" and "how," as well as certain single digits and single letters. If you want to use stop words in your search, use the "+" sign or enclose your phrase containing stop words in quotation marks. Make sure that you include a space before the "+" sign. For example, to search for Annual Report Version I, enter: annual report version +I.
You can also include the "+" sign in phrase searches.
Stemming
To get the most accurate results, enter exactly the words you are looking for into the search box. Using "stems" or "wildcards" will not improve your results. For example, searching for "stoc*" or "stock*" will not yield "stock" or "stocks". If in doubt, try both forms. For example, enter: "stock" and "stocks."
Refining Your Search
To refine or narrow your search, simply add, edit or remove words to the terms already entered. Your refined query will return a subset of the pages that were returned by your original query.
Excluding Words
You can exclude a word from your search by putting a minus sign ("-") immediately in front of the term you want to exclude. Make sure you include a space before the minus sign. For example, the search: stocks -bonds, will return pages that contain "stocks" but do not contain the word "bonds."
Phrase Searches
Search for complete phrases by using quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes will appear together in all returned documents. Phrase searches using quotation marks are useful when searching for specific names or titles.
Certain characters also serve as phrase connectors and work identically to double quotes. Inserting hyphens, slashes, periods, equal signs and apostrophes between search terms, without spaces, will join your search terms into a complete phrase. For example, the search: NYSE-listed,is treated as a phrase search.
