Fundación Navegación Oceanica Barcelona and Port of Barcelona to Promote Inaugural New York-Barcelona Transoceanic Sailing Record Quest

Fundación Navegación Oceanica Barcelona and Port of Barcelona visit the NYSE to highlight Saturday’s regatta in New York’s harbor, followed by the preparation for the New York -Barcelona (NY-BCN) Transoceanic Sailing Record, a new transoceanic test that will establish the sailing record between New York and Barcelona.

In honor of the occasion, Pere Alcober, President of Fundación Navegación Oceánica Barcelona (FNOB) and Sports Delegate of the Barcelona City Council, & Eva Ziegler, Vice President, W Hotel & Le Méridien, ring The Opening BellSM.

On Saturday, April 3rd at the North Cove Marina (in front of the World Financial Center), The Estrella Damm and W Hotels boats will compete in a two-handed regatta in New York’s harbor. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty will be the setting for the in-shore in preparation for the NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record, the first sailing record between New York and Barcelona.

On Saturday April 3rd at 1pm, the Estrella Damm (designed by Custo Dalmau) and W Hotels boats will be part of a two-handed regatta in New York’s harbor, in front of the Statue of Liberty. The event is a prelude to the New York-Barcelona Transoceanic Sailing Record, a new transoceanic test that will establish the sailing record between New York and Barcelona on April 2010.

Organized by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), in collaboration with the New York City Sports Commission, the in-shore regatta will begin at the North Cove Marina and will cover the route from Battery Park to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The boats competing in-shore are the same IMOCA Open 60’s that will compete at the NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record, departing from New York to Barcelona between April 5th and the 12th depending on the weather conditions. 
 
About the NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record
NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record is a sailing competition between New York and Barcelona, which will be held in April 2010 with two identical IMOCA Open 60 yachts, the Estrella Damm and the W Hotels. The aim of the race is to set a sailing record between New York and Barcelona, as well as to strengthen bonds between both cities with socio-cultural, educational and sporting programs. It is an initiative of the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) with the support of the New York City Sports Commission, Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and the New York Yacht Club. The Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) is the organizer of the Barcelona World Race and this new sailing event is part of the campaign that will culminate in the start of the second two-handed non-stop edition of the world race, on December 31st, 2010.
