NYSE Euronext Amsterdam and the “Gong”
The Amsterdam stock exchange is the world's oldest exchange. Share trading began in 1602 when the Dutch East India Company had its shares listed on that market. Share trading subsequently spread from Amsterdam throughout the world.

The tradition of sounding a gong to mark the start of trading on the stock exchange goes back many centuries. In Amsterdam , the gong is sounded at 09:00am (CET) to mark the opening of every trading day, and again at 17:30pm (CET) to mark the end of the trading day. The exchange invites prominent Dutch and international guests to take part in the gong ceremony. Recent guests have included government ministers, state secretaries, captains of industry, famous sportsmen and women, television personalities, and representatives of charity organizations.
