Hans Hoogervoorst, chairman of the management board of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), opens the trading day

Hans Hoogervoorst, who joined the AFM as chairman of the managing board in September 2007, sounds today's opening gong.

Hoogervoorst worked as a banking officer for the National Bank of Washington from 1983 until 1986, and from 1986 until 1987 as a policy officer for international monetary matters at the Dutch Ministry of Finance. In 1988 he worked as a policy officer for the Liberal Party in the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament, and from 1995 until 1998 Hoogervoosrt was a member of the Lower House of the States General. On 3 August 1998 he was appointed State Secretary of Social Affairs and Employment, and on 22 July 2002 was named Minister of Finance in Balkenende cabinet. In the second and third Balkenende cabinets, Hoogervoorst served as Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport.

The AFM is the regulator responsible for monitoring the conduct of and provision of information by all parties in the financial markets, including the savings, lending, investment and insurance industries. The AFM's objective in monitoring conduct is to ensure that the financial markets function properly and are accessible.
