Following the bell ringing at the New York Stock Exchange, a reception will take place on the trading floor celebrating the organization’s accomplishments. After the reception, twenty-six America SCORES youth, ages 10-12, selected from among 6000 participants in the program nationwide, will perform their original literary work on stage at the NYSE Cafeteria in honor of National Poetry Month.
ABOUT THE ANNUAL NATIONAL POETRY SLAM!
America SCORES uses the sport of soccer to inspire teamwork among urban youth. The after-school program, that takes place in more than 250 urban public schools nationwide, uniquely directs the values that students glean through sports to the classroom by asking students to express themselves in writing workshops when they are not on the soccer field. As a result, sports are used as a catalyst to reduce childhood obesity, increase academic performances, and prevent gang participation. The Poetry Slam is the annual event that culminates the literacy component of the America SCORES.
