This morning the director of Amsterdam World Book Capital, Lidy Klein Gunnewiek, sounded the gong to mark today's opening of the festival.|
Last year Amsterdam was appointed World Book Capital by UNESCO, a title it bears until 22 April 2009. Under the theme ‘Open Book, Open Mind’ a diverse programme is organized for a broad public: for professionals but also for the general public and for all ages. Spinoza, Anne Frank and Annie M.G. Schmidt are the icons of this special year.
April 22nd, the last day of the Amsterdam World Book Capital year, the Book of Importance will be presented. In the coming months a variety of prominent Dutch writers, actors, politicians, TV presenters and sportsmen have confirmed their contribution to the Book in which they will write about the importance of the ability of writing and reading. In the Netherlands about 1,5 million adults face low literacy levels.
