The NVB strives towards a strong, healthy and internationally competitive banking industry in the Netherlands. Representing the common interests of the banking sector, it strives towards the effective operation of market forces whilst taking into account the interests of its interlocutors.
Mr Willem Mijs (43) succeeded Mr Hein Blocks as director of the NVB in 2007. Before then Mr Mijs was Senior Vice President, Head of ABN AMRO Government Affairs. He was responsible for the management of the bank’s government affairs offices in The Hague and Brussels, and served as advisor to the Management Board on government affairs and EU matters. After 1993 he held a number of positions at ABN AMRO, including international positions. Before he began his banking career, Mr Mijs worked for the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and before that as a lecturer at the University of Leiden. Mr Mijs has served on a number of NVB committees and also represents the NVB at various organs of the European Banking Federation in Brussels (the leading European umbrella organisation for banks).
