The Securities and Exchange Commission unanimously approved a rule proposal that if enacted in its current form, will mandate the use of XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language) for public company reporting. The SEC is recommending a phased-in approach for compliance; companies with worldwide public float of $5 billion or more will be required to begin submitting XBRL-formatted financials in the first quarter of 2009.
