New York Cares/"Hands on New York Day"
New York Cares is seeking the help of 6,500 volunteers to spruce-up more than 100 parks, gardens, playgrounds, community centers and homeless shelters across the five boroughs. This year, volunteers will plant 20,000 trees to support Million Trees NYC. Teams will also be cleaning up New York City's shorelines, gardening, painting park benches and murals, and beautifying playgrounds.
HSBC Bank USA, N.A., is the presenting sponsor of Hands On New York Day. As the world's local bank, protecting the environment has been a long-standing concern for HSBC. HSBC was the first bank to become 100% carbon neutral in October 2005 and also opened a green branch in Greece, NY. Today, nine out of ten HSBC employees work in offices where the energy and water used and the waste and carbon dioxide produced are evaluated and reported publicly.
Hands on New York Day is structured similarly to a walk-a-thon; participants fundraise in honor of the time they spend volunteering.
This year, New York Cares hopes to raise over $75,000 to support its year-round volunteer programs.
New York Cares is one of the City's leading volunteer organizations. In 2007, more than 400,000 New Yorkers benefited from the work of 36,000 New York Cares volunteers - from reading with children, serving food to the hungry, or distributing coats and holiday gifts to those who would otherwise go without - New York Cares has been an integral part of our city for the past 21 years.
