The Folic Acid Seal
The folic acid seal is intended to quickly and easily identify those products rich in folic acid, like enriched grains, which are essential to having a healthy baby. Since the FDA issued the mandate, neural tube defects in the US have declined by nearly one-third, sparing some one thousand babies each year.

The Grains Industry Story
Three years ago, members of the baking and milling industries united to fight back against the low-carb craze that had captured the attention of the American public. Faced with lagging sales and a decline in consumption, the industry rallied with a heightened focus on innovation and education. In a few short years, the tide has started to shift in favor of grain-based foods thanks to new product introductions, public education and renewed consumer interest in bread and grains. For example:

- More than 1500 whole grain products were introduced in 2006 as compared to just over 700 the previous year* (Source: IRI and Mintel)

- Functional ingredients offering added nutrients, such as Omega 3s and folic acid, have fueled new product growth across the board and particularly in the bread aisle

- Consumer perceptions of grain-based foods have shifted dramatically with nearly 40% of adult consumers indicating that bread provides health benefits in 2007 as compared to only 12% in 2005** (Source: Harris Interactive, March 2007)
