City Harvest Rings NYSE Closing Bell in Recognition of National Poverty in America Awareness Month

For Release: 22 Jan 13
Who/What:
Representatives from City Harvest will visit the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and ring The Closing BellŪ on Tuesday, Jan. 22 to highlight National Poverty in America Awareness Month.

NYSE commends City Harvest for the work it does each day to help end hunger in communities throughout New York City. Through food rescue and distribution, education, and other practical, innovative solutions, City Harvest aids in feeding more than one million people who face hunger each year.

Since Hurricane Sandy, City Harvest has delivered 2.7 million pounds of food in direct response to the hurricane, with targeted deliveries to communities that were hardest hit, including Red Hook and Coney Island in Brooklyn, the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Breezy Point and the Rockaways in Queens, and Midland Beach, Cedar Grove, and South Beach in Staten Island. More than 1,000 of City Harvest's individual and corporate volunteers played a big part in the response, preparing tens of thousands of pantry bags from bulk food donations at City Harvest's Food Rescue Facility. City Harvest also helped provide prepared meals through relationships with the restaurant community. Partners in the food industry were asked to prepare meals that could be distributed to those impacted and they responded enthusiastically, helping City Harvest deliver some 30,000 meals.

About City Harvest:
Now serving New York City for 30 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children.

This year, City Harvest will collect 42 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.

City Harvest also addresses hunger's underlying causes by supporting affordable access to nutritious food in low-income communities, educating individuals, families, and communities in the prevention of diet-related diseases, channeling a greater amount of local farm food into high-need areas, and enhancing the ability of our agency partners to feed hungry men, women, and children.
