Managing Diversity at NYSE Group
NYSE Group believes that managing diversity is a business imperative, essential to the company’s success as the leading global financial marketplace and an employer of choice.  At NYSE Group, diversity means enabling people of all races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, disabilities, cultures, religions, and styles to work together effectively to meet company objectives and maximize individual potential in an environment that promotes the growth and development of all individuals. 

Background
The New York Stock Exchange in 1999 established a Diversity Council with Robert A. Marchman as chairman, to advise senior management and acts as a sounding board for employees about diversity issues.

The Council’s Mission Statement
“The mission of the Diversity Council is to ensure the future success of the NYSE by supporting its efforts to create and maintain a culture that fosters an inclusive, diverse workforce and an environment in which everyone has an opportunity to be successful to the full extent of his/her ability.”

2007 Diversity Council Membership
The Diversity Council currently has 19 volunteer members who represent various divisions across the company.  The Council has five committees:

  • Career Development/Mentoring/Work Life – Chaired by Gordon Brown
  • Communication – Chaired by Ray Pellecchia
  • Diversity Training and Education – Chaired by Yolanda Trottman
  • Organization Assessment Measurement – Chaired by Jim Buckley
  • Recruitment and Representation  – Chaired by Joyce Goldzman

2007 Diversity Council Initiatives

  • NYSE Community Volunteers program, offering employees an opportunity to volunteer to help community causes
  • Mentoring program (officers mentor small groups of employees)
  • Extension of employee benefits to domestic partners
  • Flexible-work arrangement program
  • Training all management and professional staff on diversity issues; adding a diversity segment in new-employee orientation and management-development programs
  • Enhancement of job-posting program
  • Expansion of minority recruitment for all levels of employment
  • Adding diversity-management values to annual performance reviews
  • Program to nominate employees for bell-ringing recognition
  • Broadening NYSE Foundation’s Matching Gift Program to make eligible a wider array of charitable causes
  • Periodic cultural assessments to inform decision-making by senior management
  • Enhanced promotion of the importance of diversity to the NYSE through internal and external communications
     
  • Diversity Dialogue Dinners with Duncan L. Niederauer and Richard G. Ketchum
